What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

There are two main types of rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty:

Open rhinoplasty involves an external incision along the columella (the lower part of the nose between the nostrils), allowing direct access to the internal structures of the nose.
Closed rhinoplasty, on the other hand, is performed inside the nose with no visible external incision. The choice between these two techniques will depend on the patient’s individual needs and the surgeon’s preferred approach.

What is the recovery time after rhinoplasty?

Recovery time after rhinoplasty can vary from patient to patient. In general, patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and discomfort for the first few days after surgery. Bandages and nasal splints are usually removed after about a week. Some swelling may persist for a few weeks or even months, but most patients can resume normal activities within two weeks of surgery.

How does the procedure work?

The rhinoplasty procedure can vary according to the technique used and the patient’s specific goals. In general, the procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes the necessary incisions, then reshapes the bone and cartilage structures of the nose to achieve the desired results. Once the procedure is complete, dressings are placed over the nose to support and protect the new structures. The duration of the operation can vary, but on average lasts from 1 to 3 hours.

Before the operation

The first consultation is essential to clarify your expectations and establish a relationship of trust with your surgeon. You will be able to agree on your objectives and possible results, based on synthetic images generated by simulation software. This will give you a clear idea of the outcome of your operation. Risks and potential complications are discussed in detail with the doctor, so that you, our patient, fully understand all aspects of the surgical treatment.

During the operation

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, rhinoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, or under general anesthesia.

Rhinoplasty can be open or closed. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made at the base of the nose, between and inside the nostrils. In closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made only inside the nostrils.

The surgeon then accesses the bony and cartilaginous structures of the nose to modify them according to the objectives set during the consultation. This may involve reducing or sculpting the nasal bone, correcting the deviated septum, reshaping the cartilage or other adjustments necessary to achieve the desired shape and function.

Finally, the incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures or threads that will have to be removed later. Nasal swabs or wicks can be placed inside the nose to aid healing.

After the operation

After the operation, we’ll keep you under observation for a while in our recovery room. The operation is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can go home the same day.

Rhinoplasty results

A support cast will protect your nose after the operation; it will be removed at the same time as the threads, after 8 days.

Work can be resumed after 3 days, and sporting activities after one month.

You will be able to appreciate the result of your procedure after one month, but you will have to wait 6 months for it to be definitive.
