Abdominoplasty: tummy tuck surgery

Get a flat stomach

Objectives of abdominoplasty

Wondering how to restore a flat stomach after pregnancy or major weight loss? Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to firm and reshape the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening weakened abdominal muscles.

Abdominoplasty is often performed after significant weight loss or pregnancy, when the skin and abdominal muscles have become slack. It can also be performed to improve the appearance of abdominal scars resulting from previous surgery.
It’s important to note that abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure and carries certain risks, including anesthesia-related complications, infections and bleeding. A prior consultation with a cosmetic chiurgeon experienced in abdominoplasty is essential to decide whether this procedure is right for you.

Excess skin or excess fat?

Abdomen with excess skin

A tummy with excess skin is characterized by an accumulation of loose, flabby skin around the abdomen. This can occur for a number of reasons, such as significant weight loss, pregnancy or aging.

When a person gains weight, the skin of the abdomen stretches to accommodate the new fat mass. If the person then loses weight rapidly, the skin may not have enough time to retract and may remain loose and flabby.

Similarly, pregnancy can stretch the skin of the abdomen, which can lead to excess skin after delivery.

Finally, aging can also contribute to loss of skin elasticity, which can lead to excess skin on the abdomen.

An abdomen with excess skin can be unsightly and cause self-esteem problems. Cosmetic surgery, such as abdominoplasty, can help correct this problem by removing excess skin to restore a firmer, flatter stomach.

Abdomen with excess fat

An excess fat abdomen is characterized by an accumulation of adipose tissue in the abdominal region. This can occur for a number of reasons, such as overeating, lack of physical activity, aging, stress and hormonal disorders.

Excess abdominal fat is characterized by increased waist circumference, abdominal protrusion and an overall puffy appearance of the abdomen. In addition, it can contribute to health problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and sleep apnea.

To reduce excess abdominal fat, lifestyle changes can help, such as adopting a balanced, healthy diet, exercising regularly, managing stress and stopping smoking. However, if these measures aren’t enough, liposuction or other cosmetic surgery procedures can be considered to remove excess fat in a more targeted and effective way.

Questions and answers about abdominoplasty

Procedure for abdominoplasty

First consultation

This step is essential to enable the surgeon to examine you, assess your needs and expectations, and make sure there are no contraindications. At the end of this interview, you will receive a precise estimate for your operation.

Anaesthesia

Abdominoplasty is generally performed under general anesthesia, which means that you will be asleep throughout the operation.

Incision

The surgeon makes a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen, just above the pubis. The length of the incision will depend on the amount of skin to be removed. An incision is sometimes made around the navel to isolate it from the surrounding skin.

Suturing muscles

The surgeon lifts the skin and underlying tissues to access the abdominal muscles, which can then be tightened by suturing them together to create a firmer, flatter stomach.

Removal of excess skin and fat

Excess skin and fat are removed to create a smoother, flatter abdomen.

Repositioning the navel

If necessary, the navel is repositioned in its new location.

Suture

The surgeon closes the incisions with surgical sutures, surgical glue or clips. Drains can be placed under the skin to drain off excess fluid.

Dressing

The operated area is covered with a dressing and/or compression bandage to help reduce swelling and maintain the shape of the abdomen.
