Objectives of genioplasty

Genioplasty procedure
The first consultation
The first consultation with your genioplasty surgeon is essential to establish the basis for a trusting relationship. You will discuss your needs and expectations with him/her to assess whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.
Your surgeon will inform you about the different treatment options for your chin and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each option. He or she will also inform you of the risks and complications associated with genioplasty, and offer advice on how to minimize them. At the end of the consultation, you will be given a precise estimate. This will give you all the information you need to make an informed decision.
During the operation
Genioplasty can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure. The course of the procedure varies according to the techniques and approaches used by your surgeon.
A small incision is made under the chin or inside the mouth, then the surgeon alters the shape of the chin by using surgical tools to move or remove the chin bone, or by using implants to add volume to the chin.
He then closes the incision with sutures or surgical adhesives before applying a dressing to protect the surgical area and promote healing.
Depending on the technique used and the extent of the procedure, the duration of the operation varies between 30 minutes and 2 hours.
Osteotomy genioplasty
Osteotomy involves cutting the chin below the roots of the teeth. The surgeon then moves the bone fragment to the desired location and fixes it with screws or mini-plates (osteosynthesis).
The incision in the mouth is then closed with stitches, which disappear in 2 to 4 weeks or are removed at the consultation.

In some cases, the shape of the chin can be corrected with a bone graft.
This is usually taken from the skull or, more rarely, from the pelvis.
After the operation
You will be hospitalized for a few hours before being allowed to go home on the day of the operation.
